Goat kids frolic at Creekside Farm

Nestled in the hills of Athens County, dairy goats at Creekside Farm graze the 90 acres of wooded hillsides, meadows, and creek bottoms.

Creekside Farm has hit the ground running. Currently in their second year licensed to make value added dairy products, their cheese, yogurts, and goat’s milk soaps can be found in the retail spaces at Avalanche Pizza, The Athens Bread Company, Village Bakery, The Farmacy, and on the cheese platters at Little Fish Brewery. You can also visit them on Saturday mornings at the Athens Farmers Market. In addition to the products available in retail outlets, their cheese is utilized in dishes at Lui Lui Restaurant. Village Bakery is working up a new Panini special which will feature Creekside’s chèvre cheese.

Though Krista Duval and Paul Tomcho have prior experience in agriculture and dairy farms, Creekside Farm is the husband and wife team’s first venture into owning and managing their own farm. “Now I see on a day-to-day basis what it takes to be the people managing the land, and the health of the animals, and doing basic vetting, and milking, and making products and marketing,” Krista said. Farming is an intricate and beautiful labor of love and one which requires both persistence, and a vast array of skill sets. “It’s a life that we like, we’ve chosen this and it’s really satisfying.”

Paul and Krista manage the farm with strong attentiveness to the welfare of their animals and the environment. To show this commitment, Creekside Farm recently underwent Animal Welfare Approved (AWA) certification. The farm was already utilizing many of the practices and standards upheld by the AMA program, however they saw the certification process as an opportunity to further improve their practices, as well as display to customers the high level of standards observed by Creekside Farm.

The farm uses rotational grazing practices and sustainable farming techniques which result in lower environmental impact and healthier animals. “Moving the goats frequently promotes both pasture and animal health,” Paul explains. “With this system, the risk of ingesting parasites is diminished, meaning we can avoid the routine use of wormers and other medications. We’re proud that our animals do not depend on the frequent use of medications to stay healthy.”

And healthy animals produce better products! Creekside Farm offers AWA certified cheese, yogurt and goat’s milk soap. In addition to products from their dairy herd, Creekside Farm’s offerings includes a colorful array of eggs produced by a flock of about 100 hens of varying breeds. Like the goats, these hens enjoy the freedom of foraging in the pastures.

Their free-range diet includes bugs and plants, and is supplemented with grain- some of which comes from spent grains from local Athens County brewers.
